Computer Information Systems Syllabus for the school year 2010 – 2011

Course: 922 – Computer Information Systems .5 credits Elective 11,12

Purpose & Description: Computer Information Systems is a semester course. The course includes a study of spreadsheets and graphs, a brief introduction to databases and an introduction to HTML and webpage design.

General Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic computer operations and concepts:
a. Develop an understanding of basic operating Heprocedures.
b. Demonstrate knowledge of file management.
c. Develop communication strategies for solving routine hardware and software problems.
2. Practise resonsible use of technolgy systems, informatiaon and software.
a. Adhere to fair use and copyright guidelines.
b. Adhere to school's Acceptable Use Policy.
c. Model responsible use for equipment.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts of spreadsheets, databases and webpage design softwares.
4. Use technology to locate and evaluate information from a variety of sources.
5. Use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions.
6. Use a variety of tools to communicate information effectively to support distance education and cooperate with specific audiences.
7. Be familiar with a number of fundamental computer science terms which will be found on each of the different tests. Click here to view the terms the student should learn.

OPTIONAL HOMEWORK (8 pts to be added to a test score) Announced on TBD and then by TBD Students must send an email to Mr. Bittner (barry@bittner.net) by 9:00 PM with the following information gathered from the favorite computer used in the home by the student:

a. Full name of the Operating System used on the computer including the service pack, if a PC. If a Macintosh identify the operating system and the version number.
b. Processor found in computer along with its speed in MHz or GHz.
c. Amount of RAM used on the computer.
d. Size of Hard Disk Drive found on the computer identifying the Used Space and Free Space shown in bytes or GB
e. List the devices with removeable storage found on the computer.
f. Identify if a wireless network is used in the home and if the student's computer is a member of that network.

g. When sending the email make sure your P section (P3, P4 or P5) is listed in the subject line or points will be lost.

Grading of class assignments:
Projects will count for 40% of the student's grade and tests will count for 60% of the student's grade.

There will be a Final Semester Exam with 100 questions (T or F and multiple choice).

Class Assignments:
Class assignments are laid out in the school timetable (see navigation buttons above). The student can go to the timetable and determine exactly what their class is going to do for any particular day they choose.
