Class Assignments
Class assignments are laid out in the School Time Table (see the navigation buttons above). The student can find out exactly what they will be working on by going to this location and then seeing what their section will be accomplishing on any specific day.

Windows Movie Maker will be learned by hands on experience and no textbook will be used.

Image Editing:
Image Editing will consume 1/2 of the semester's work.
After each chapter of the textbook there will be a Chapter Review followed by a Project and a Test of the material in that Chapter..
Chapter Projects: 40% of the student's grade(1 class period)
Chapter Tests: 60% (25 question test with some computer science terms included) of the student's grade
Final Image Editing Project will be a Personal Logo developed by each student and will be weighed as a Test score. See below for more details about this project.

Video Editing:
All students will complete 3 projects during the quarter. Project 1 - Basic movie will be based on film footage provided by the teacher and developed by the student. Project 2 - Magic/Home Movie video will be based on film footage obtained by the student and developed by the student. Home Movie will be based on film footage provided by their own family from bygone years or from some source such as a DVD or VCR tape. Project 3 will be a 2-Minute tutorial movie. Students who own a Macintosh computer at home and wish to use that as a tool to accomplish the video projects will be allowed to do so.
Video Projects: 40% of the student's grade and will generally be a 2-3 day effort
Video Tests: 60% (25 question test with some computer science terms included) of the student's grade

Final Semester Project in lieu of a Final Semester Exam:

Semester Grading:
40% for each Quarter Grade for a total of 80% of the student's grade
20% for the Final Semester Project grade

Special Project on Filters (Optional)

Students who successfully accomplish the following project during the 3rd Quarter on filters can get the equivalent of a test score of a 100. This project was published on a web site: http://www.tutorialjungle.com/display.php?t=fire-text
Students are to take the word FIRE and make it look like this:

Additional Instructions for Adobe Photoshop CS3

Filling type with imagery

You can use the imagery from a layer in one file as a fill pattern for another image's type layer. To create this effect, open a multi-layer file that contains the inagery you want to use (the source), then open the file that contains the type you want to fill (the target). In the source file, activate the layer containing the imagery you want to use, use the Select menu to select all, then use the Edit menu to copy the selection. In the target file, press [Ctrl for PC] or [Command for Mac] while clicking the "T" on the type layer to which the imagery will be applied, then click Paste Into on the edit menu. The imagery will appear within the type.

Projects to be accomplished during the semester course.

Personal Logo Project (Photoshop)

Objective: To develop a personal logo. This logo should include your initials along with a background. As a suggestion you can develop something around your family crest that includes your initials.
Method: Student will work alone on the project. All layers should be named and used. The student should prepare a writeup in Microsoft Word of the actions taken to develop the project so the teacher has the best possible understanding of the work that went into the preparation of the project. When all work is complete the student will drop the final product into Teachers Apple/Drop Off Folder for their class.
Tools to be used: Students will use Photoshop and scanner as necessary to design the layout.

Yearbook Montage (Photoshop)

Objective: To develop a photographic spread or montage of the student's life and activities as if they were going to place this page in the back of the PVI year book.
Method: Students should obtain pictures of their childhood and any other pictures they might like to display on the montage. They will scan them into the computer and utilize the Photoshop tools to arrange them attractively for the montage. When placing images into the Montage make sure that all edges are smoothed (feathered). Remember this Montage is about you the student and the images used should be primarily about you and your family, not sports and car images as examples. Make sure all layers are properly labeled and used in the development of the Montage. If a layer is not used delete it. If a layer is used it should have a name that is descriptive of what it is. The student should prepare a writeup in Microsoft Word of the actions taken to develop the project so the teacher has the best possible understanding of the work that went into the preparation of the project. When all work is complete the student will drop the final product into Teachers Apple/Drop Off Folder for their class.
Tools to be used: Students will use the camera, scanner and Photoshop as necessary to design the layout.

Video Project - Basic Movie (Video)

Objective: To develop an approximately 2-minute movie from footage captured by the teacher of sights and sounds around PVI.
Method: Students will work alone on this project. As a minimum there should be a introductory title, some transitions, text on some of the video clips, audio and a ending title. When all work is complete the student will drop the final product into Teachers Apple/Drop Off Folder for their class.
Tools to be used: Students may use Windows Movie Maker or iMovie as necessary to design the movie.

Video Project - Magic or Home Video (Video)

Objective: To develop an approximately 2-minute movie around a magic trick or Home Video. The magic trick is fairly self-explanatory and I will let your imagination determine what it should be. For details on the Home Movie see paragraph below. These movies should include all or some of the following features: transitions, special effects, still clips, titles, voiceovers and music. The developer of the movie will have to capture the necessary footage and can shoot the footage themselves or have another party shoot the footage for the movie.
Method: Students may work in pairs on the project, but only 1 student will receive credit for the work done on the movie. The student should prepare a writeup in Microsoft Word of the actions taken to develop the project so the teacher has the best possible understanding of the work that went into the preparation of the project. When all work is complete the student will drop the final product into Teachers Apple/Drop Off Folder for their class.
Tools to be used: Students may use Windows Movie Maker, iMovie and Photoshop as necessary to design the movie.

Over the years that I have conducted this class I have kept the best magic tricks and placed them in the Magic Movie Hall of Fame. In order to view the Magic Movie Hall of Fame click here.

Video Project - 2-Minute Tutorial Movie(Video)

Objective: To develop a 2-minute video based on a skill that the student has. The tutorial should be done on any subject that you care to use that teaches the viewer how to accomplish something.

Final Digital Imaging Project

Background: This project will serve in lieu of a final exam for the Digital Imaging Course. The student will develop a project that will be a combination Photoshop images and Video film. Students are encoujraged to turn this project into a gift for a member of their family. Those who take this project on as a gift invariably do a superior job to those who don't. Since the first semester leads up to Christmas it is an excellent time to develop a gift for a member of your family.

Method: To develop a video of a duration from 4-minute to any length desired. Students will work alone on the project, but may receive help from the teacher on conversion methods moving analog footage to digital footage that can be manipulated by a computer. The source of the video can be from old 8mm film, DVD or VCR tape or photos found that would enhance the goal of your project. Titles, music, sound effects, transitions will be included to enhance the video footage. The final product will be presented to the teacher either by dropping the movie off in the Drop Off folder on Teachers Apple or provide the teacher with a CD or DVD of the student's work. The student should prepare a writeup in Microsoft Word of the actions taken to develop the project so the teacher has the best possible understanding of the work that went into the preparation of the project.

Tools to be used: Students may use Windows Movie Maker, Story Board, morphing software, iMovie, iDVD, Photoshop or any special editing software the student may have on their home computer that would serve the project well to design the movie.
